Miles Wynn Cato

has been an independent art dealer for nearly 30 years, with particular expertise in British paintings, watercolours and drawings from the 17th to 19th centuries. Of Welsh descent, Miles is also widely-recognised as the UK's leading expert dealer in pre-20th century Welsh art.

Miles has a long record in finding 'sleepers' and over the course of his career, he has discovered many works of art which had been lost, mis-catalogued or previously unrecognised. The process always involves exhaustive research and close collaboration with expert art historians and conservators. Miles's primary focus as a dealer is in bringing these lost works to light, then placing them with key private collectors and museums across the world.

Discoveries have included important works by Thomas Gainsborough, Thomas Jones, Richard Wilson, Thomas Lawrence, Joseph Wright of Derby, Angelica Kauffman, William Parry, Henry Walton, Paul Sandby, Arthur Devis, Hugh Douglas Hamilton, William Hoare of Bath and many others.

In a special exhibition during London Art Week of July 2022, Miles launched his new catalogue of 14 of his most significant discoveries in recent years. Please see News & Events for further information.

Miles began collecting and dealing while still an undergraduate at Cambridge, where he read History at Magdalene College. Afterwards, he worked initially for the late David Howard, an expert in Chinese Armorial Porcelain and founder of Heirloom & Howard. He then went on to work for two other highly-respected London dealers: David Ker Fine Art and subsequently, Dickinson in St James's, one of the world's leading dealers in Old Master & Modern paintings. In 1995, Miles left Dickinson to set up as a fully independent private dealer.

Over the years, Miles has served as an independent expert to appraise artworks for the UK Government's 'Acceptance in Lieu' tax scheme. He has also written a number of books, including the first biography and catalogue raisonne of the portrait painter, William Parry, ARA (1743-91), who trained with Sir Joshua Reynolds and enjoyed the patronage of great landed families such as the Williams-Wynns of Wynnstay.

Miles offers a broad range of related services including advising & bidding at auction, valuations, historical research, and advice about conservation & framing.

In addition, Miles has given a number of illustrated lectures on his experiences as an art dealer and is always pleased to receive further enquiries.
